Unless you’ve been living under a rock the past few years, then you’ve probably heard about the Ketogenic Diet or “Keto Diet” throughout TV, magazines or on the Internet. It’s become all the rage as far as diets go, but is it just another “fad” diet trend, or is there something to this unique way of eating for a healthier body and to lose weight?
 
To find out, let’s do a simple breakdown of what the Ketogenic Diet does, and how it works. The basic Keto diet is pretty simple, and it includes eating LOW carbs and higher levels of “good fats”.
 
It’s been found that when you consume higher levels of carbs (like pasta, rice, breads, etc.) that your body will produce more amounts of Glucose and Insulin. When these are produced in your body, they are either used as primary sources of energy vs. or they are stored as fat. The current fat within your body is not used or burned off as energy.
 
But when you “Go Keto” by cutting out high levels of carbohydrates in your diet, this will induce a state within the body that is called “Ketosis” – thus, the name, Keto Diet.
 
Ketosis is a process that occurs naturally within the body when it shifts to a mode of survival, when the food intake level is low. During the state of Ketosis, the body will produce “Ketones” which are a result of the breakdown of fats in the liver.
 
To put it simply, when your body goes into Ketosis and Ketones are released, this puts your body into a more metabolic state where it will then start to burn Ketones as its primary energy source instead of Glucose and Insulin (from consumed carbohydrates).
 
In order to make this work safely, one must not starve themselves of food, but simply greatly reduce the levels of carbohydrates that include typical breads, pastas, rice and even sugary drinks and snacks (which are considered simply carbohydrates). Also, adding in healthy fats through nuts and fish are also part of the Keto Diet as well.
